Distracted Driving Awareness Month | Statesville Police Department

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month - a time to bring attention to one of the most preventable dangers on our roadways. At the Statesville Police Department, we are committed to keeping our community safe, and that starts with raising awareness about the risks of distracted driving.

According to the National Safety Council, on average, nine people lose their lives every day in distracted driving crashes. These tragedies are often preventable and serve as a powerful reminder that even a moment of inattention behind the wheel can have life-altering consequences.

What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts your attention from driving. This includes:

  • Texting or using a phone
  • Eating or drinking
  • Adjusting the radio or navigation system
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming or reaching for items

Texting is especially dangerous because it takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and your mind off driving - all at the same time.

The Real Impact

Distracted driving doesn’t just affect the driver - it puts passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists at risk. A single glance at a phone can lead to a crash that changes lives forever. These incidents are not just statistics; they represent families, friends, and members of our community.

Simple Steps to Stay Safe

The good news is that distracted driving is preventable. By making small changes, you can help protect yourself and others:

  • Put your phone away before you start driving
  • Use “Do Not Disturb” mode or apps that block notifications
  • Set your GPS and music before you begin your trip
  • Speak up if you’re a passenger and notice unsafe behavior
  • Pull over safely if you need to send a message or make a call

Make the Choice That Saves Lives

Our goal is not just enforcement - it’s prevention.  Every time you get behind the wheel, you have a choice. Choosing to stay focused and distraction-free can save lives - maybe even your own. Let’s work together to keep Statesville’s roads safe. Stay alert, stay focused, and drive responsibly.
