Stay Safe on the Roadside: Quick Tips from Statesville Police Department

Whether you’re driving, biking, walking, or working along the roadside, safety should always come first. This July, the Statesville Police Department is spotlighting National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month with quick reminders to help keep everyone safe.

Why It Matters

Each year, thousands of roadside crashes result in serious injuries or fatalities. From breakdowns to emergency responders to road crews, being alert and making smart choices can make all the difference.

Move Over and Slow Down

North Carolina’s Move Over Law requires drivers to shift one lane away from any emergency or service vehicles with flashing lights. If that’s not possible, slow down. This law helps protect law enforcement, EMS, tow drivers, and others assisting on the roadside.

What to Do if You Break Down

  • Pull off the road safely and turn on hazard lights

  • Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt if it’s not safe to exit

  • Call for help and only exit if you're in a safe area.

Tips for Drivers

  • Avoid distractions like texting or GPS adjustments

  • Watch for flashing lights and reduce speed near crews

  • Obey speed limits, especially in work zones

  • Keep a roadside emergency kit in your car (first aid, flashlight, flares)

Tips for Pedestrians and Cyclists

  • Use crosswalks and obey traffic signals

  • Wear reflective gear when walking or biking at night

  • Avoid distractions like headphones or phones

  • Cyclists: ride with traffic and stick to bike lanes
