Veteran Story: Charles "Hugh" Cook
A Home Worthy of His Sacrifice: How a Community United for Vietnam Veteran Hugh Cook
Charles Cook, known to those who love him as Hugh, served his country with distinction during one of America's most turbulent chapters. From 1968 to 1971, the young sailor answered the call, earning the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and several unit commendations before returning home to build a life.
Decades later, the battles Hugh faces are quieter but no less demanding. Agent Orange exposure has left a long shadow, bringing with it frontotemporal dementia, PTSD, peripheral artery disease, restrictive airway disease, COPD, chronic falls and neuropathy, conditions that have made everyday life in his own home increasingly difficult and, at times, dangerous.
That's where Purple Heart Homes stepped in.
A Home in Need, A Community That Answered
When Purple Heart Homes' VAIP (Veterans Aging in Place) program first assessed Hugh's home in Lawton, Oklahoma, the needs were clear and urgent. Deteriorating subfloor made safe movement through the house a daily risk, narrow doorways blocked wheelchair and mobility aid access, and the bathrooms lacked wheelchair access and fall resistance aids, making his basic needs a major risk. The home that Hugh shared with his household needed to become safe again.
What happened next is a testament to what's possible when communities rally around those who served.
Beginning in June 2024 and completing on March 25, 2026, a coalition of nonprofit partners, funders, and volunteers transformed Hugh's home. Seventeen volunteers gave their time and labor. The Home Depot Foundation provided grant funding to make the work possible. Community partners, including the Semper Fi Fund, Tinker Federal Credit Union, Building Homes for Heroes, and contractors Willscot and A&A Roofing & Construction, brought expertise, resources, and heart.
The Work
The scope of renovations touched every corner of daily life:
- Subfloor replacement eliminated a critical safety hazard underfoot
- Full-house flooring installation created a smooth, accessible surface throughout
- Three doorways widened to allow mobility aids to move freely through the home
- Modifications in the bathrooms to improve accessibility and reduce fall risk
Each change, practical on its surface, represents something deeper: the ability to move through one's own home with dignity.
More Than a Renovation
Hugh Cook served during Vietnam, an era that asked everything of its service members and too often gave little in return. His medals speak to the complexity of that service: expeditionary duty in Korea, campaigns in Vietnam, unit commendations earned alongside fellow sailors. He carried the weight of that service home, and he has carried the physical toll of it ever since.
For Hugh and the other member of his household, this renovation is more than new floors and wider doors. It's a community saying, clearly and with action: We see your service. We honor it. You deserve to be safe in your home.
Purple Heart Homes is grateful to every volunteer, partner, and funder who made this project possible, and proud to serve Veterans like Hugh Cook, whose sacrifices deserve nothing less.
