City of Statesville Hurricane Preparedness Week

Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 3 - 9, 2026 (Hurricane season: June 1 - November 30, 2026)

Hurricane Preparedness Week is an important annual reminder for communities across the country - including here in Statesville - that severe weather can impact us even far from the coast. Hurricanes and tropical systems can bring heavy rain, flooding, high winds, and power outages hundreds of miles inland. Taking time to prepare now helps protect lives, property, and our community when a storm threatens.

Led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Hurricane Preparedness Week encourages everyone to understand their risk and take simple steps before hurricane season begins on June 1, 2026.

NOAA’s 7 Hurricane Preparedness Topics

Each day of the week focuses on a key preparedness message:

1. Know Your Risk: Water & Wind

Understand how hurricanes can affect our area. Flooding from heavy rain and strong winds can occur even inland, so it’s important to know your specific risks.

2. Prepare Before Hurricane Season

Build or update your emergency kit, review your insurance coverage, and create a family emergency plan before a storm is on the way. Learn more about building your emergency kit from the Statesville Fire Department here.

3. Understand Forecast Information

Learn how to interpret watches, warnings, and forecast updates so you can make informed decisions quickly. Learn more from the NOAA on understanding forecast information here.

4. Get Moving When a Storm Threatens

Immediate action is necessary to be ready when a storm is forecasted to impact our area. Protect your home, determine sheltering options, ready your go-bag, meds & supplies, charge your phone, fill up your car with gas, help your neighbors (if needed), and follow evacuation orders (if given). Learn more here.

5. Stay Protected During Storms

Have a safe place to shelter and stay indoors, away from windows, while the storm passes.

6. Use Caution After Storms

Ensure that you have a way to get weather alerts and forecast updates. You'll want to keep in mind that impacts can be felt far from the coast. Listen to local officials and avoid travel unless ordered to evacuate. Be aware of hazards like flooded roads, downed power lines, and debris when it is safe to go outside.

7. Take Action Today

Don’t wait - preparedness starts now. Even small steps taken today can make a big difference during an emergency.

Hurricane Preparedness Week is a great opportunity for residents and businesses in Statesville to review plans, gather supplies, and stay informed. It only takes one storm to make an impact - being prepared today helps ensure our community stays safe and resilient.

Remember, it's always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared when it comes to hurricanes. Take these steps to ensure that you and your family are ready for whatever may come our way.
